A planned new high-speed line replacing the existing curvy Fulda–Gerstungen corridor through the Werra valley, which currently limits trains to around 160 km/h due to its winding alignment through hilly terrain. The new line would allow speeds of 300 km/h and dramatically reduce travel times on the Frankfurt–Erfurt axis. It is classified in the Bundesverkehrswegeplan 2030 as Vordringlicher Bedarf and complements the parallel capacity upgrades of the existing route under the ABS Hanau–Würzburg/Fulda–Erfurt project.
